The Lovers: A Tarot Card for Fiction Writers
Share
The Lovers speak to love, choice, and duality. At their best, characters with Lovers energy are great communicators. They're emotionally available and honest, and able to hold both intimacy and independence.
What The Lovers Means for Your Story
The Lovers represent love, choice, and duality.
The Character Who Shows Up
The Lovers can show up as a character who has to make a choice: someone torn between options, or defined by the intimate bonds and connections between characters. As an archetype, this is the lover, the partner, the soul mate, the epitome of romantic ideals (who may or may not live up to that idealistic vision). Characters carrying Lovers energy thrive in intimate relationships: deeply connected, trusting, and cherishing their partner. Marked by passion, they're the romantic idealist, perhaps a poet or a hopeless romantic, seeking an equal partner or a twin flame.
At their best, they're great communicators, emotionally available and honest, adept at balancing intimacy with independence. They value honesty, strive for understanding and compromise, and work to ensure mutual care and respect.
On the Shadow Side
On the shadow side, their devotion can curdle into jealousy, possessiveness, and clinginess if security starts to feel threatened. Character traits can shift into smothering and co-dependent behavior, with poor boundaries and real dependency issues, and a struggle to compromise at all.
Themes to Mine

Plot Possibilities

Sources of Conflict
In the story
Potential conflicts involve indecision, an internal tension between head and heart, and the risk of losing one's own identity by giving away too much power to someone else.
In relationships
Conflicts may show up as love triangles, conflicting desires, and struggles between independence and dependency. Fear of intimacy, trust issues, and insecurity can all lead a character straight into self-sabotage.
