FAQ

About the Books & Tarot

Do I need to know tarot to use these books?

Nope. These books are designed for writers, and I walk you through everything as we go. The techniques can be put to work in your creative process whether you are a tarot newbie or have been working with tarot for a long time.

Is this fortune telling? Do I have to believe in tarot?

Nope, and nope. The techniques in the books use tarot as a creativity tool. Think of the cards as 78 little story prompts—a deck of archetypes, images, and emotions to pull from whenever a plot stalls or a character goes flat. You don't have to believe in anything except the idea that your stories matter and your creativity isn't broken; it just needs a nudge.

And if you do read tarot for insight, reflection, or your own practice you're in the right place too. Think of creative prompting as a second job for your deck. Skeptics and longtime tarot readers alike: warmly welcome.

Which book should I start with?

If you're new to using tarot for writing, start with Tarot for Fiction Writers. It's the foundation and teaches the whole method from the ground up. From there, Tarot Spreads for Fiction Writers and the Quick Guides build on what you've learned. Short version: Tarot for Fiction Writers first, everything else second.

What's the difference between Tarot for Fiction Writers and the Spreads book?

Tarot for Fiction Writers teaches you the method—how to read the cards as a writer and turn them into story. Tarot Spreads for Fiction Writers is your visual toolkit—a collection of ready-to-use spreads for specific writing problems, like building a character, untangling a plot, or figuring out what your antagonist really wants.

What are the Quick Guides?

The Quick Guides are short, focused references—bite-sized companions for when you don't need a whole book, just a fast answer. Keep one open next to your manuscript and pull a card whenever you're stuck. They distill the essentials of tarot card meanings, numerology, and symbolism into something you can reach for mid-scene.

Which tarot deck should I get?

Any deck that sparks something when you look at it. I recommend starting with a traditional Rider-Waite-Smith-based deck, since the imagery is rich with story and most guides (including mine) reference it—but honestly, the best deck is the one you'll actually want to pick up. I'm putting together a page of some of my personal favorites, so check back soon and I'll link it right here, but the three decks I reach for most often are:

The Light Seers Tarot by Chris-Anne
The Dark Wood Tarot by Sasha Graham

The Modern Witch Tarot by Lisa Sterle

Can I buy your books somewhere other than here?

Yes! My books are available at most major retailers—Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and more. But buying directly here is the best way to support an indie author (hi, that's me), and you'll often find bundles and formats you won't get anywhere else. Same stories—more of your money stays with and supports the person who wrote them.

You Write Fiction, Too?

Wait—you write fiction too?

I do! Under my pen name Jessica Arden, I write paranormal cozy mysteries and romance full of ghosts, small-town charm, and a healthy dose of humor.

What order should I read your fiction in?

Here's the map:

  • The Ghosted cozy mysteries (starting with Once Ghosted, Twice Shy)
  • Love & Ghosts series (read in order): start with The Skeptics' Guide to the Mysteries of the Universe (Book 1), then Ghosts of Midnights Past (Book 2).
  • Collide, the standalone romance can be read anytime.

The Ghosted books and Love & Ghosts are set in the same universe with some cross-over characters.

Come for the ghosts, stay for the swoon.

Classes, Courses & Coaching

Do you teach live classes?

I do, from time to time. My live Tarot for Fiction Writers 101 is an interactive class where we work through the method together in real time. New dates open up periodically—the best way to catch the next one is to join my newsletter (details below).

Is there a self-paced course?

Yes—and it's almost here. The Tarot for Fiction Writers 101 self-paced course is launching soon: all the goodness of the live class, on your own schedule, whenever inspiration (or a plot hole) strikes. Want first dibs and launch-day pricing? Get on the newsletter and I'll make sure you're the first to know.

Do you offer coaching?

It's on the way. I'm putting together one-on-one coaching for writers who want more personal guidance putting the method to work in their own manuscripts. It's coming soon—hop on the newsletter to hear the moment it opens.
